COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

Barbering focuses on the skills and knowledge needed for individuals interested in careers within the barbering industry. Within the Barbering program of study, students are provided the opportunity to acquire basic fundamental skills in both theory and practical applications, with an emphasis on leadership and interpersonal skill development.  The curriculum stresses safety, environmental issues, and protection of the public and designers as integrated with principles of haircutting, skin, nails and scalp care, and chemical and barbershop management.  Second and third year courses offer advanced knowledge and skills in hair design, hair cutting, shaving, nail care, scalp care, cosmetic applications, chemicals and barbershop management, which are enhanced in a laboratory setting, which duplicates industry standards. 

 

  • Upon completion and acquisition of 340 hours, students are eligible to take the Tennessee Board of Barbering Examination for a Tennessee Barbering Technician License.  

  • Upon completion and acquisition of 1500 hours, the students are eligible to take the Tennessee Board of Barbering examination for a Tennessee Master Barbering License.

  • Dual Enrollment Credit with Tennessee College of Applied Technology is offered in Barbering. 

  • Students can receive the Career Readiness Certification.

  • Students can receive OSHA 10 Certification.

The Business Management program teaches students to  analyze the elements of the business environment and to focus on attitudinal and problem-solving skills inherent to success.  Topics covered in this program include the production, marketing, and distribution of goods and services, as well as the roles of the financial institutions, the government, and the individual within the free enterprise system. Students will explore various careers related to the economy. Students in Business Management will develop a foundation in the many activities, problems, and decisions that are intrinsic to the management of a successful business, as well as an appreciation for the importance of these responsibilities.  These students receive hands-on business management experience in this program by running the Trezevant Savings Bank, which is a student-run bank, located within TCTC.

  • The Business Economics  course and the Virtual Enterprise International course satisfies ½ credit of Economics required for graduation.

  • The American Business Legal Systems course satisfies ½ credit of U.S. Government required for graduation.

  • Students have an opportunity to receive the Financial Literacy Certification (CFL).

  • Dual Enrollment Credit with Southwest Tennessee Community College is offered in Business Management.

  • Students can receive the Career Readiness Certification.

  • Students can receive OSHA 10 Certification.

Cosmetology

Cosmetology is designed to prepare students for careers within the personal care industry, including hairstylist, colorist, and nail technician. Within the Cosmetology program, students are provided the opportunity to acquire basic fundamental skills in both theory and practical applications, with an emphasis on leadership and interpersonal skill development.  The curriculum stresses safety, environmental issues, and protection of the public and designers as integrated with principles of hair, nail structure, and cosmetic procedures.  Second and third year courses offer advanced knowledge and skills in hair design, nail artistry, and cosmetic applications. The laboratory facilities and experiences simulate those found in the cosmetology industry and duplicates all industry standards.

  • Upon completion and acquisition of 300 hours, students are eligible to take the Tennessee Board of Cosmetology Shampoo examination for a  Tennessee Shampoo Technician License.

  • After successfully completing the “Chemistry of Cosmetology” course, students will acquire the necessary hours to transfer to a post-secondary course of study to complete the hours needed to be eligible to take the Tennessee State Board of Cosmetology examination for the Tennessee Cosmetology License.

  • Dual Enrollment Credit with Tennessee College of Applied Technology is offered in Cosmetology.

  • Students can receive the Career Readiness Certification.

  • Students can receive OSHA 10 Certification.

Culinary Arts

The Culinary Arts program prepares students for gainful employment and/or entry into post-secondary education in the food production and service industry.  Designed to introduce students to food preparation concepts, terminology and practices in the modern commercial kitchen, the content provides students the opportunity to acquire marketable skills by examining both the industry and its career opportunities and by  developing food preparation and service and interpersonal skills. The course content will provide students the opportunity to acquire  marketable skills by demonstrating the principles of safety and sanitation, food preparation skills, and teamwork to manage an environment conducive to quality food production and service operations. Laboratory facilities and experiences, which simulate commercial food production and service operations, offer school-based learning and work-based learning opportunities.

Culinary Anchor
Diesel Technology

The Diesel Technology program allows students to  explore various career opportunities and the requirements needed to become a professional service technician. The content emphasizes   beginning transportation service skills and workplace success skills.  Students study safety, tools, equipment, shop operations, as well as basic engine fundamentals and basic technician skills.  Students are introduced to proper procedures and practices for preventive maintenance and servicing, and they learn how to perform entry-level technician inspection tasks. The advanced students are trained in the diagnosis and repair of the electrical systems of medium and heavy trucks, as well as the testing and repairing of diesel engines and related systems.

  • Upon completion of the courses in the TCTC Diesel Technology  program, students are eligible to take the ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) exam for Heavy Truck Preventative Maintenance, Electrical and Electronics in Medium/Heavy Trucks, and Diesel  Engine. 

  • Dual Enrollment Credit with Tennessee College of Applied Technology is offered in Diesel Technology.

  • Students can receive the Career Readiness Certification.

  • Students can receive OSHA 10 Certification.

Diesel Anchor

The Distribution & Logistics program exposes students to careers and businesses involved in the planning, management, and movement of people, materials, and products by road, air, rail, and water, and prepares them for entry into the warehouse and distribution career field. The course content stresses a deep understanding of the dynamics of distribution and logistics operations, the warehousing skills needed for the tracking and managing of inventory, and the problem-solving skills used by logisticians in  today’s complex business environments.  Safety, tools, equipment, operations, processes, customer fulfillment, product lifecycle, future trends, and regulatory issues are all covered in depth, and prepares students for entry into the warehouse and distribution career field. Through exposure to crucial business activities such as project management, analyzing logistical problems, and producing new solutions, the students will acquire advanced skills related to business professionalism, ethics, policies, and communication.

Fire Management Services

The Memphis Fire Department has partnered with Shelby County Schools to offer a uniques program designed for students interested in becoming a firefighter or fire management professional. The Fire Management Services program provides comprehensive preparation in firefighter safety, fire behavior, building construction guidelines, use of firefighter equipment, safety with hazardous materials, and more.  Upon completion of this program, students will have acquired the skills and knowledge needed to pursue a career as a Firefighter I, and will be prepared, after graduation, to further their instruction at a training facility.

  • Upon completion of this program, students can test to receive the Fire Fighter 1 certification.
  • Students can receive the Career Readiness Certification.

  • Students can receive OSHA 10 Certification.

Fire Management Services

The Health Science program provides students with an adequate knowledge of health care careers and supplies competent, trained workers into the workplace or into a pathway that leads to entrance into a one-, two-, or four-year program at a college or university.  This program recognizes health care needs and provides students with updated information on new and innovative technology in health care.  Targeted goals of the Health Sciences program are to support a direct cooperative effort between high school and postsecondary education for allied health and nursing  programs, as well as.to collaborate with the health care industry to update and change knowledge and skills for all students enrolled in Health Science Education.

 

Students can receive the following industry certifications in Health Sciences at Trezevant CTC: 

  • CPR-BLS (Basic Life Support)

  • C.E.R.T. (Community Emergency Response Training)

  • MRC (Medical Reserve Corp)

  • Various FEMA Emergency Preparedness certifications

  • Certified Nursing Assistant

  • Certified Medical Assistantant

Anatomy & Physiology and Nutrition Science & Diet Therapy each satisfies one lab science credit required for graduation.
